Getting To Know Your Carpet
3/22/2017If you're in the market for carpet at the Lake of the Ozarks - Barefoot Floors has just what you need. Carpeting accounts for at least 51% of flooring types in the United States, and it's no wonder when you take into account the affordability, ease of installation, and with modern technology - stain resistant and pet-friendly! Before you head out to our flooring shop at the Lake of the Ozarks to buy your new carpet, here are a few things you may want to know:
Carpeting Types
There are two types of carpeting, and knowing the difference can help you become an educated shopper. The two types are defined by the way the carpet fibers are attached to their backing.Loop Pile Carpet
This carpet style means that the fibers are bent into little loops. It's extremely durable and stain-resistant. It has a low profile and limited cushioning, though. Within loop pile carpet you'll find level loop and multi-level loops. Level loop is also called Berber. It features short loops that stand up well in high traffic. Multi-level loops mean that the top of the loops can vary in height, and gives the carpet a patterned texture.Cut Pile Carpet
Cut pile carpeting is where the yarn tips are cut so that there aren't any loops. This type of carpet tends to be denser and softer than loop pile and it comes in several varieties. Plush carpet has an even, smooth texture, and can be formal in appearance. Saxony is smooth, but the fibers are longer and twisted to give more body. While Saxony is popular, the longer fibers can mean that footprints linger and furniture can create dents. Textured cut pile carpet has fibers of uneven length creating a rougher surface. Frieze carpet has long fibers and isn't ideal for a high traffic area (it's also known as shag carpet). Cable carpet has long, thick fibers and is very comfortable to walk on.Carpet Fibers
Carpeting can be made of various different materials, and the fibers can be synthetic or natural.Nylon: This is the most popular carpet fiber. It's very durable and resistant to wear and tear. Keep in mind, though, that it's not as good at fighting stains, but some varieties have a stain-resistant treatment.
Olefin: This carpeting is resistant to moisture, mold, and mildew. It makes a great carpet for basements and outdoors. It's tougher than nylon, but not quite as comfortable.
Acrylic: This material is used as an inexpensive alternative to wool and not as common.
Wool: Are you looking for premier carpeting? Wool is just that - as well as the only natural fiber made into carpets. It's durable, stain resistant, and even an eco-friendly floor covering.
